{"id":4888,"date":"2025-08-30T12:54:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T12:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/sfs\/?page_id=4888"},"modified":"2025-12-23T20:31:46","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T20:31:46","slug":"comparable-coverage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.gcc.mass.edu\/sfs\/health-insurance\/comparable-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"Comparable Coverage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Per Massachusetts state guidelines, to be considered comparable coverage, the insurance coverage provided must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Include reasonably comprehensive coverage of in-patient and out-patient hospital and physicians' services<\/li>\n<li>Be reasonably accessible to the student in the area where the student attends school<\/li>\n<li>Include coverage for non-emergency health care, lab tests, x-rays and other services where the student attends school<\/li>\n<li>Include coverage dates from at least the first day of classes until at least August 31 of the next calendar year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have a plan that requires you to use network doctors and services, and the network is not close to your school, then you are not covered. Emergency coverage is not enough to qualify. The following health insurance plans are not considered comparable coverage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MassHealth Limited<\/li>\n<li>Health Safety Net<\/li>\n<li>Children\u2019s Medical Security Plan<\/li>\n<li>Some out-of-state Medicaid plans<\/li>\n<li>Insurance plans from outside of the US and coverage by foreign national health service programs<\/li>\n<li>\"Uncompensated Care Pool\" coverage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is the student\u2019s responsibility to determine whether they are covered under a comparable insurance plan.
